Global Food Prices Hit Two-Year High as Supply Crisis Deepens

Global food prices have hit a two-year high according to the latest Food and Agriculture Organization report, driven by drought conditions across major wheat and rice producing regions, disruptions in shipping routes, and the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe that has curtailed grain exports. The FAO Food Price Index rose 4.2% month-on-month, with cereals, vegetable oils, and dairy products registering the sharpest increases. Several low-income countries are already reporting critical food shortages, prompting emergency appeals to international aid agencies.

The World Food Programme has warned that an estimated 340 million people across 70 countries are now facing acute food insecurity, the highest figure recorded since the agency began tracking global hunger data. Governments in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa are scrambling to subsidise staple foods and bolster local production, while international organisations urge wealthy nations to accelerate food aid pledges and reform agricultural trade policies to prevent a full-scale humanitarian crisis.
