UN Climate Emergency Summit Produces Historic 142-Nation Agreement
World leaders gathered in Geneva for an emergency UN Climate Summit, reaching a landmark agreement that commits 142 nations to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. The accord requires signatories to triple their renewable energy capacity, phase out coal power by 2035, and contribute to a $500 billion annual green finance fund to help developing nations transition away from fossil fuels. Climate scientists have called it the most consequential environmental agreement since the Paris Accord.
Environmental activists, while welcoming the deal, have urged governments to move faster on implementation, warning that current pledges still fall short of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the agreement a defining moment for humanity, stressing that every nation must now back their commitments with concrete legislation, enforceable targets, and immediate investment in clean energy infrastructure.
