India’s 5G Revolution: 700 Million Subscribers and a Startup Ecosystem in Overdrive
India’s 5G rollout has crossed a landmark 700 million subscriber milestone, making it the world’s fastest national 5G adoption on record, surpassing even China’s early rollout pace. Reliance Jio and Airtel have now covered over 98% of Indian cities and towns with 5G connectivity, while BSNL’s indigenous 5G network — built entirely on Indian-developed core technology — has gone live in 100 cities, marking a historic achievement in telecommunications self-reliance. Average 5G download speeds in urban India now exceed 300 Mbps, enabling new applications in telemedicine, smart manufacturing, and autonomous vehicle testing.
The economic impact of 5G is already being felt across industries. Indian startups in augmented reality, edge computing, and IoT have raised over $4.2 billion in the past year, driven largely by the new possibilities unlocked by ultra-low-latency connectivity. The government’s Digital India initiative has identified 5G as the backbone of its smart cities programme, with 50 cities already piloting AI-powered traffic management, real-time flood monitoring, and connected public transport systems running on the new network infrastructure.
