India’s First Home-Made Semiconductor Chip Rolls Out of Tata’s Dholera Plant

India’s semiconductor ambition took a giant leap forward as the government inaugurated the country’s first domestically manufactured chip at the Tata Electronics fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat. The 28-nanometre chip, developed in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, marks a defining moment in India’s journey to reduce dependence on foreign chip imports that currently cost the nation over $50 billion annually. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the milestone a testament to India’s technological self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Dholera plant, backed by a Rs 91,000 crore investment, is expected to reach full production capacity by 2027, manufacturing chips for use in smartphones, electric vehicles, defence systems, and consumer electronics. Industry analysts project that India’s semiconductor ecosystem could generate over 1 lakh direct and indirect jobs within the next decade, positioning the country as a serious competitor to established chip-making hubs in Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States.
